HADIMBA JAYA: The Temple of Dawn
From ancient times till the present, people had believed that this region was destined to receive the blessings of Buddha. And so, the hadimba temple was built here, around 600 BC. It is believed that Lord Buddha had heard the cries of a cowherd (girl) who had tied her calf to a tree, but had run away at the sight of her distress, had looked for comfort at this hadimba temple and had performed meditation and had attained nirvana. Legend has it that Lord Buddha had attained nirvana and the cowherd had then given the calf to king Ajatsatru, who had raised and had nourished it. Hadimba had been established as a temple in the seventh century BC, as mentioned by Buddhism’s early texts.
Legend had it that once on a visit to paridvan, Ajatsatru had performed the rituals required to bless the land and had offered alms to hadimba temple. But, unfortunately, he had forgotten the vows he had made and had fallen on the woman who had been tending to her calf. This had prompted the bird-lady of hadimba temple to punish the man who had caused his brother to fall by striking him on the forehead. The king had sent an army to try and conquer Manali, but when they failed he went into a deep trance and had become a god. People had thought that this had happened because the king had seen a vision of his daughter adorned with the hadimba jewel, which had changed her to a radiant woman who had become the patron deity of Manali.

The Wonder of India – Hadimba Devi Temple
Hidimba Devi Temple or hadimba devi temple, also called Dholeida Devi Temple, located at Manali, is dedicated to Hidimbi Devi the Hindu deity. The beautiful hadimba temple is built in five stories and dedicated to Hidimbi, wife of king Kindai who was killed by her brother Subhadra. The story goes that Subhadra had married Hidimbi after his wife died and had an infant son named Dhamal, whom he named Vaitape. To honor Vaitape and to ensure his safety from evil forces, Kindai had his father cut the name “Dhwaj” from his nose. Hidimbi had become protective of Dhamal and warned King Kindai about a demon and a snake who had stolen her husband’s kingdom.
Legend has it that the deities had decided to reward Kindai for having obediently maintained the order of his household. Hence, on this day of Rakshabandhan, hadimba devi temple Manali was built. The temple includes a small building which houses the stone carving of Hidimbi, the main deity of the Jain religion.
Legend has it that when Lord Kindai had completed his task of eradicating the demon and had made Manali a heaven, Goddess Hidimbi had looked down on Manali and had cursed it saying that no man can enter Manali or even take the offerings made to her. Later on this hadimba devi temple was built on the site of the old cremation chamber where the original hadimba deity had been placed. The temple is protected by the Sarnath River and the forest of tiger. All that needs to be done is to visit the temple at least once during the year and avail of the sweets offered to the deities that are prepared by the villagers.
