The relation of Baba Khatu Shyam is believed to be from the Mahabharata period. Panduputra was the grandson of Bhima. There is a story that being impressed by the immense power potential of Khatu Shyam, Shri Krishna granted him a boon to be worshiped in his name in Kali Yuga.
About the story of Khatu Shyam
In the incident of Lakshagriha, the Pandavas, wandering from forest to forest after saving their lives, met a demonic named Hidimba. She wanted to get Bhima as her husband. On the orders of Mother Kunti, Bhima Hidimba was married, due to which a Ghatotkacha was born. Ghatotkacha’s son was Barbarik, who was more powerful than his father.
And it was a worshiper of Barbarika Devi. By the boon of the Goddess, he received three divine arrows, which he used to hit his target and return. Because of this, Barbareek became invincible.
During the war of Mahabharata, Barbarik was coming to Kurukshetra to watch the war. Shri Krishna knew that if Barbarika was involved in the war, the result would be against the Pandavas. To stop Barbarik, Shri Krishna posing as a poor Brahmin goes in front of Barbarik.
Being unaware, Shri Krishna asked Barbarik, who are you, why are you going to Kurukshetra. In response, Barbarik told that there is a philanthropist who can decide the Mahabharata war with one of his arrows. When Shri Krishna wanted to take the test, he shot an arrow which pierced all the leaves of the Peepal tree. A leaf was under Krishna’s foot, so the arrow stayed on top of the foot.
Shri Krishna was surprised by the ability of Barbarik and wanted to prevent him from participating in the war by any means. For this, Shri Krishna said to Barbarik, you are very mighty, I will not give anything to the poor. When Barbarik asked for donation, Shri Krishna asked Barbarik for his head. Barbarik understood that he was someone else and not a Brahmin and asked him to give real introduction. Shri Krishna gave his real introduction, Barbarik happily accepted the donation of head.
After performing bhajan-worship throughout the night and bathing and worshiping well on Falgun Shukla Dwadashi, Barbarik donated his head to Shri Krishna with his own hand. Before donating the head, Barbarik once expressed his desire to see the war with Shri Krishna, so Shri Krishna installed the severed head of Barbarik on a high place for war observation.
When the Pandavas were debating to take the credit of victory on victory in the war, Shri Krishna said that it can be decided by Barbarika. The head of Barbarik told that the Sudarshan Chakra of Shri Krishna was running in the war, due to which the warriors were drinking blood in the form of Mahakali, falling in the battlefield like a cut tree.
Krishna pleased and blessed that severed head of Barbarik that in Kaliyuga you will be worshiped by my name Shyam, just by remembering you, the welfare of the devotees will be achieved, Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha will be attained.
After seeing the dream, Baba Shyam appeared from Shyam Kund situated in Khatu Dham. Shri Krishna is fulfilling the wishes of the devotees by being situated in a temple of Khatu Shyam ji since 1777 in the form of Virat Shaligram. Swayambhu Balaji is seated in this temple with beard and mustache

A very nice fair of Khatu Shyamji is held every year during Holi. In the fair, devotees from all over the country and abroad come to see Baba Khatu Shyam ji. Devotees have deep faith in the temple. Baba Shyam, Hare Ka Sahara, Lakhdatar, Khatushyam ji, Morvinandan, Khatu ka Naresh and Sheesh ka Dani are called devotees of Khatu Shyam by all these names.
